Main Article Content
Abstract
Cities designated as UNESCO Creative Cities are committed to preserving their cultural heritage and fostering innovative solutions. Bursa, which joined the Creative Cities Network in 2021, is particularly noteworthy for its craftsmanship and folk arts. It is believed that tourism can ensure the sustainability of handicrafts, which play a significant role in preserving and expressing the cultural identity and self-image of societies. This study, which focuses on the process of Bursa’s joining the UNESCO Creative Cities Network and the role of tourism in promoting and developing intangible cultural heritage in this process, highlights the significance and meaning of handicrafts not only as an aesthetic element but also for the continuity of societies cultural identity and self. Given the abstract and multifaceted nature of the creative city identity, it is essential to conduct a theoretical examination. In this context, the aim is to understand and conceptually analyze Bursa’s creative city identity, the city’s contributions and gains at the local, national, and international levels, using its participation in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network as an example. It has been concluded that innovative and creative marketing strategies that encourage the participation of local people through handicrafts, when combined with tourism integration, can contribute to the effective promotion of the region's cultural richness.
