Analysis of Root Values in the 12th Grade English Textbook

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyze the English textbook "Notifier English 12" in terms of "ten root values". Descriptive content analysis was used in this qualitative research. The data source of this study was the "Notifier English 12" textbook, which was prepared based on the 2018 Secondary School English Curriculum and taught at the 12th grade level in secondary education. The ten root values determined by the Ministry of National Education are expressed as "justice, friendship, honesty, self-control, patience, respect, love, responsibility, patriotism, helpfulness". In the research, the presence of root values in the "Notifier English 12" English textbook was evaluated separately for each unit, the results were tabulated, and the pages where they appeared, value frequencies and percentages were determined. As a result of the research, the most mentioned value in the "Notifier English 12" English textbook was friendship (15), while the least mentioned value was patriotism (1). As a result of the research, it was determined that root values were not included in some units in the "Notifier English 12" English textbook. For this reason, it was concluded that root values should be enriched in the units in the "Notifier English 12" English textbook.
